A gas radiator runs completely independently from your central heating system. It burns natural gas or LPG inside a sealed combustion chamber and transfers heat directly into the room, requiring only a gas connection and a power outlet. That makes it a practical option for any space where running central heating pipes isn't feasible.
What is a gas radiator?
A gas radiator is a standalone heating unit that uses mains natural gas or bottled LPG as fuel. It operates independently, with no connection to a boiler or water-based heating circuit.
Unlike an open gas heater, a gas radiator has a hermetically sealed combustion chamber. All combustion gases are expelled outside through a flue pipe. No fumes enter the room, and the carbon monoxide risk is eliminated entirely.
How does a gas radiator work?
The burner ignites gas inside the sealed chamber. Heat spreads into the room through convection. Because the flame never contacts the indoor air, there are no toxic by-products to worry about.
All it needs to run is:
- a connection to the electrical supply;
- a connection to the gas supply or LPG cylinder.
Installation
Installation requires a hole through an external wall to accommodate two pipes:
- a flue pipe to expel combustion gases outside;
- an air intake pipe to supply fresh air to the combustion chamber.
Always have a qualified gas engineer carry out the installation. This is a legal requirement in most countries.
Types of gas radiator
- Natural convection, balanced flue: the simplest type, no fan;
- Natural convection, forced flue: a fan handles flue gas extraction;
- Forced convection, balanced flue: a convection fan circulates heat;
- Forced convection, forced flue: the most powerful and versatile option.
Where gas radiators make sense
Gas radiators work well as a supplement to existing heating, and are particularly suited to:
- rooms used only occasionally;
- holiday homes and second properties;
- offices and commercial spaces;
- restaurants and hospitality venues;
- utility rooms, laundry rooms, and storage areas.
Because they are fully independent, you can heat only the room you actually need, which cuts energy use considerably.
