Condensing boiler: how it works and when it is worth installing one

With the arrival of the first cooler months comes renewed attention to home heating. And if the old boiler is starting to consume too much, requires frequent repairs, or is simply many years old, one solution worth considering is a condensing boiler.

But what changes compared with a traditional boiler?

How does a condensing boiler work?

The operating principle is fairly simple. Combustion produces hot flue gases containing water vapor. The main difference between the two systems concerns how the heat produced is used. 

  • In a traditional boiler, some of the energy is lost through the flue gases.
  • A condensing boiler, on the other hand, recovers some of the heat contained in the water vapor in the flue gases and uses it to help heat the system water. This energy recovery is precisely what enables a high-efficiency boiler to reduce waste compared with an older heating unit.

Condensation works best, however, when the water returning to the boiler is not excessively hot. For this reason, these heating units are particularly suitable for systems that can operate at lower temperatures, such as underfloor heating.

Are condensing boilers compatible with radiators?

This does not mean that a condensing boiler with radiators is not a good solution. It can work perfectly well with traditional radiators too, especially if the system is properly sized and the water temperature is adjusted according to the home’s actual needs.

The presence of radiators is therefore not, in itself, a reason to rule out this technology. Before carrying out any work, it is more useful to assess the characteristics of the entire system and determine the temperatures at which it can operate effectively.

When is it worth replacing an old boiler with a condensing model?

It can be an interesting solution especially if:

  • the existing boiler is now outdated or inefficient;
  • maintenance work is becoming increasingly frequent;
  • you want to improve the efficiency of the existing system without completely transforming the heating system
  • the home already has a gas system and you do not want to completely modify the heating system.
  • the home already has a working gas system;
  • radiators and the water circuit are still in good condition;

Let’s look at a practical example. In an apartment with radiators, an existing gas system, and a boiler installed many years ago, switching to a modern condensing boiler can be a relatively simple project compared with replacing the entire system.

If, on the other hand, a home is being completely renovated, including improved insulation and perhaps the installation of solar panels, it may be useful to compare a boiler with other technologies, such as a heat pump, before making a decision.

Condensing boilers and the Thermal Account: what to know

Any available incentives may also affect the cost-effectiveness of a project. In 2026, one of the schemes to be aware of is the Thermal Account, which covers specific energy-efficiency improvements and the production of thermal energy from renewable sources, subject to precise conditions and requirements.

It is important, however, not to assume that purchasing a new boiler automatically qualifies you for an incentive. The installed technology, the system being replaced, and the characteristics of the project must be assessed before purchase to determine which benefits actually apply.

Conclusions

Before making a choice, it is therefore always best to start with the same question: not simply “which boiler should I buy?”, but which heating system is best suited to my home?

Assessing the system as a whole makes it possible to choose a solution that genuinely meets your needs, improving comfort and efficiency without carrying out unnecessary work.
