Where to Install an Air Conditioner for Best Cooling

Dove installare il climatizzatore per raffreddare meglio

Where you mount a split air conditioner matters just as much as which model you buy. A poorly positioned unit distributes air unevenly, drives up your energy bill, and makes rooms less comfortable even when it's running flat out.

Getting the installation position right means cooler rooms, lower running costs, and comfort that actually lasts through the summer.

The most common positioning mistakes include:

  • Mounting directly above a door
  • Fixing too close to the ceiling with no downward air deflection
  • Placing behind furniture or curtains that obstruct airflow
  • Installing in a very humid room, such as a bathroom
  • Mounting above a heat source, like a hob or oven

All of these limit how well cold air circulates and reduce the unit's effective cooling capacity.

For better results, mount the indoor unit on a wall that's central to the room, so air can reach all areas evenly.

In the living room, choose a clear wall with no nearby obstacles. Good airflow around the unit makes a real difference.

In the bedroom, avoid aiming the airflow directly at the bed. Sleeping in a direct cold draught is uncomfortable and can cause stiff muscles. A lateral position or mounting on the upper part of a side wall gives a gentler, more gradual cooling effect.

Consider how much sun the room gets. South- and west-facing rooms heat up faster and may need the unit placed where it can counter that heat load most effectively.

The outdoor unit also needs a suitable location:

  • Well ventilated
  • Free from obstructions around the fan
  • Away from direct heat sources

A correctly installed outdoor unit keeps the whole system running at peak efficiency.

Take the time to think through placement before installation and you'll get noticeably better cooling, lower bills, and a more comfortable home all summer long.
