Which Air Conditioner to Choose , Quick Guide

Quale climatizzatore scegliere: guida rapida

Choosing the right air conditioner isn't straightforward without a basic understanding of the types available. Not all units are the same, and buying one just because it's on offer can turn into an expensive mistake. There's a suitable option for every situation. This guide breaks down what matters.

Monosplit vs. Multisplit: What Do They Mean?

Every air conditioning system has two main components:

  • Outdoor unit: commonly called the "compressor" or "motor" , the larger unit mounted outside the building.
  • Indoor unit: the part inside the room that delivers cool or warm air.

The word split refers to the indoor unit. A monosplit system connects one indoor unit to one outdoor unit. A multisplit system connects two or more indoor units to a single outdoor unit.

A dualsplit is a common choice for covering a bedroom and a living room simultaneously. Trialsplit, quadrisplit, and pentasplit configurations are widespread in commercial premises and offices.

1. Wall-Mounted Air Conditioner

The wall-mounted unit is the most common type: the classic air conditioner most people picture. It's usually installed near a corner of the room.

2. Cassette Air Conditioners

Cassette units are installed in the ceiling, recessed into a suspended ceiling structure. Originally designed for commercial use, they've become popular in residential settings too, particularly in modern homes with dropped ceilings.

They're physically larger than wall units, but since they're recessed, only the grille is visible from inside the room. See our selection of cassette air conditioners.

3. Floor-Standing Air Conditioner

A floor-standing unit is mounted low on a vertical wall, close to the floor, or placed directly on it. This type is recommended for rooms with low or irregular ceilings, such as attic conversions. Some models can be installed at floor level or ceiling level depending on the setup.

4. Ducted Air Conditioners

Ducted systems suit large homes or properties spread across multiple floors. One or more outdoor units generate conditioned air, which is then distributed to vents throughout the building via a duct network concealed inside suspended ceilings.

5. Air Conditioners Without an Outdoor Unit

Sometimes installing an outdoor unit isn't an option: building regulations, homeowners' association rules, or heritage restrictions can all prevent it. In these cases, a split without an outdoor unit is the answer. The compressor is built into the indoor unit itself. Installation requires two holes drilled into the exterior wall to allow heat exchange.

Portable air conditioners work on the same principle. Find them here.
